Something New at GALLACHERS ….. Ever fancied being a Wine Taster & ReviewerE
However much we love tasting the wines from suppliers, we thought it would be great for our customers to also get to make choices of what we stock. March sees Ellen tasting one of our new Australian Wines due in this month and one that we will be tasting at our Australian Night on Saturday 21st March
Over to you Ellen….
I’m no wine expert. I know if I like something, I know if I don’t. But ask me what grape I like, or which country’s wine I prefer, and I’m a bit lost. That said, I’ll try anything once and I’m happy to trust people who know more than me when it comes to tasting something they think I’ll like based on the kind of wine I tend to enjoy.
Cue Gallacher’s ….. – the chance to taste a bottle of something you may never have tried before, and potentially find a new favourite. When Debbie asked me if I liked Australian wine, I just didn’t know. I’ve had a few, but none that were particularly memorable and I don’t have particularly strong feelings either way about wine from Oz. But one question I could answer was the kind of red I tend to go for. Powerful with a bit of punch that can be okay drunk alone but might also go well with food – and hearty food, given the weather we’ve been having lately. Debbie chose ‘Miss Harry’ – a 2016 blend of five grapes from Barossa Valley. On first taste, it is pretty punchy, with the spice it promises in the summary as well as some cherry and a bit of the ‘dustiness’ you’re told to expect. For a winter’s night, I found it a perfect warming glass of red. But for me, where it really came into its own was when we drank it with a rich beef ragu covered in parmesan. The spice of the wine goes perfectly with the herbs and meatiness of the food while its hint of sweetness counteracts the savoury parmesan. A great choice by Debbie and it’s safe to say the bottle didn’t last long!
